Down the Rabbit Hole in Michigan - Mad Hatter Bistro

Updated: Sep 2, 2020

In Birmingham, Michigan about an hour outside of Detroit lies a rabbit hole into Wonderland. That place is called The Mad Hatter Bistro.

Behind a cute black door and a large metal sign labeled Mad Hatter Bistro lies your portal to Wonderland. Once inside this quaint and cozy space you will find a full bar, mood lights and themed seating. Fall down the rabbit hole and you will learn there is an even bigger area downstairs straight out of the Mad Hatter’s Tea party complete with 7ft rosebushes.

Our Menu Choices

- Risotto Bites > parmigiano-reggiano and gruyere cheese, black truffle with a side of marinara.

- The Mad Hatter Burger > ground beef, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, brioche bun which we added poutine to top it off.

- Chicken Panini > all-natural chicken breast, caramelized onions, roasted peppers, avocado, Calabrian aioli & Flagship cheddar on focaccia bread, served with hand cut fries.

- Tea and Scones > Bottomless Tea for One - fresh baked scones served with clotted cream, basil lemon curd and seasonal home made preserves

Food

To start we ordered the Risotto Bites for the table which were absolutely delicious. It was crispy on the outside and creamy/gooey on the inside. The bites weren't a cheese pull like a mozzarella stick which was perfect and it tasted great with or without the marinara.

Next up I ordered the Tea and Scones with the english breakfast tea which was lovely with some cream and really didn’t need any sugar since their teas run on the sweeter side. I'd never had scones before, but it really reminded me of a sweet biscuit. It’s not what I thought it would be like, but I really enjoyed it especially with the clotted cream, basil lemon curd and preserves all layered together on top.

Finally I ordered the chicken panini minus the avocado and roasted peppers. I also enjoyed it. I really appreciated the ingredients chosen for it, it definitely seemed to be more thoughtful then just a thrown together basic chicken sandwich.

Pro Tip: If you are wanting a full tea party experience make sure to make a reservation and you must call at least a day ahead to book it. More info and full links provided at the end.

Final Thoughts

I feel like this is a great spot for any Disney/Alice in Wonderland lover, but it is also great for anyone. It achieves the perfect blend of whimsy and classy. It is definitely a place anyone can go to without feeling out of place if they aren’t a huge fan of Alice and does a great job of remaining adult while delighting anyone. Overall, I would definitely recommend Mad Hatter Bistro for anyone looking for something unique in Michigan.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the bistro wether you’ve been or like to go soon let me know!

Keep on Rocke-in’

Love,

Naty
